Halitosis

Understanding
Halitosis is a condition in which a person has a bad breath. In the community, this disorder is better known as bad breath. This disorder is one of the problems that many people face.

Basically, the bad breath is divided into two groups, namely bad breath due to natural causes and bad breath due to unnatural causes. Bad breath due to natural causes such as morning breath or when you are fasting. While bad breath due to unusual causes are usually associated with more serious health disorders.

Halitosis is often regarded as a shame. If not treated immediately, bad breath can lower your confidence. In fact it is not possible also halitosis that diabiarkan can degrade the quality of your life.


Diagnosis
Halitosis or odorous dianosis is done through a series of interviews and a thorough physical examination of the oral and dental cavities. Examination is also performed on the area of the nose and throat - if there are injuries.

If there is a suspicion of a possible systemic disease, then there is a need for other supporting examinations. The checks that can be done are:

  • Endoscopy 
  • X-ray abdomen 
  • Chest x-rays

Symptoms
The most easily recognizable symptoms of halitosis are:

  • The smell of bad breath from the mouth 
  • The mouth is dry 
  • The presence of a white coating on the surface of the tongue that allows bacteria to thrive


Treatment
Halitosis or bad breath due to a waajr cause (such as the smell of breath on waking) can be overcome by brushing your teeth. However, halitosis due to unnatural causes requires more serious treatment.

Here are some things you can do to solve the problem of halitosis:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day. The best time to do this is in the morning (after breakfast) and at night (before bed).
  • Replace toothbrush after 3 to 4 months. If prematurely replace the toothbrush has been damaged and uncomfortable to use, immediately replace it.
  • Perform regular surface cleansing of the tongue. This can be done using a soft toothbrush or tongue cleaner.
  • Perform flossing once a day to remove plaque and food scraps stuck between teeth slits. You can also use mouthwash to clean out areas that are hard to reach for toothbrushes.
  • Use of antibacterial mouthwash can help reduce the growth of bacteria in the mouth. For example a mouthwash containing chlorhexidine. Consult your dentist first in the use of mouthwash. 
  • Perform scaling (tartar cleaning). 
  • Repair and patch the cavities immediately.  
  • Stop smoking and use of tobacco products.
  • Expand drinking water to keep the moisture in the oral cavity.
  • Consumption of sugar free gum to stimulate saliva in order to help clean up leftovers and bacteria.
  • Notice the diet. Avoid or reduce foods that can trigger bad breath. 
  • Clean the dentures and release during sleep at night. 
  • Make regular visits to the dentist every 6 months for routine checkup and cleaning.

Cause
Halitosis can be caused by many things. Some of them are:

  • Poor oral hygiene. Without good oral cleansing, food scraps will be left in the mouth. This can trigger the development of bacteria in the mouth and on the surface of the tongue causing odor in the mouth. In addition, the remaining food attached to teeth, gums, and tongue will cause gingivitis (gingivitis) and cavities. The result is an increase in bad breath and unpleasant taste in the mouth.
  • Improper denture cleansing. Dentures that are not cleaned properly can cause the buildup of food scraps and bacteria on the surface of denture teeth. This can trigger the emergence of unpleasant odors.
  • Gum disease or periodontal tissue (dental support tissue). 
  • Systemic disease. Bad breath can be a symptom of a particular disease, such as a respiratory tract infection, indigestion, diabetes, or liver disorders.
  • Xerostomia (dry mouth). The use of certain drugs can cause the mouth to dry, especially medicines to overcome depression and high blood pressure. Xerostomia can also be caused by abnormalities in the salivary glands so that the production of saliva decreases. In addition, mouth breathing habits can also cause the mouth to tend to become drier. 
  • Smoke.
